The Situation in Cambodia |
In Cambodia, education remains a distant dream for many children due to pervasive poverty. Although the government provides free tuition from primary to middle school, families must still cover costs for uniforms, books, and other expenses that are insurmountable for the poorest households. The dropout rate reflects this harsh reality: 35% of children leave primary school, and over 75% abandon high school. Among rural farmers, who make up much of the population, 90% are illiterate, and 70% struggle with addictions to alcohol, smoking, and domestic strife. With an annual income of less than $800 for most farming families, many parents migrate to Thailand seeking work, leaving their children with relatives. Unskilled and desperate, they cannot provide, and their children drift further from hope—and from God.
